Gambling At The Foot Of The Cross

Text: John 19: 23 - 24

GAMBLING AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS

The scene of the crucifixion was sombre and sad for all the followers of Jesus. Their beloved Master was cruelly and painfully nailed on the Cross. Yet, amidst the pain and suffering, the soldiers who were on duty were gambling over the garments that Jesus had worn.

“Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. They said therefore among themselves, ‘Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,’ that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: ‘They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.’ Therefore the soldiers did these things.”

4. “That the Scriptures might be fulfilled”

a. This even was already prophesied (Psalm 22:18).
i. This was called a Messianic prophecy.
ii. The Messiah Jesus was being crucified as prophesied.
b. The soldiers did not know that they were fulfilling the Scriptures.
c. The Scriptures were once again proven true, though painfully so.
