A Tender Word Given
Text: John 19: 26 - 27
A TENDER WORD GIVEN
Jesus loved His disciples to the very end, though they were weak and not stable. He loved His mother dearly too for all that she had done for Him when He was growing up. His heart reached out to her as He saw the sorrow and anguish that were obviously expressed.
“When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, ‘Woman, behold your son!’ Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.”
John 19:26-27
1. “What Jesus therefore saw”
a. It is amazing that Jesus would even notice anyone.
b. The pain of being crucified was excruciating, yet He took notice:
i. Mary, His mother.
ii. The disciple whom He loved was none other than John, the author of this gospel.
2. “He said to His mother”
a. It is not easy to speak when one is in so much pain.
b. It was with tremendous effort that Jesus spoke as He did.
c. His strength to speak and to care came from a heart full of love.
3. “Woman, behold your son”
a. The word “woman” was a term of respect.
b. Jesus showed deep respect to His mother.
c. He could not be the Son to her.
d. But He would give her a son to look after her in old age.
4. “Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother’”
a. He asked His beloved disciple John to look after Mary as his own mother.
b. This was a trust that was given to His disciple whom He loved dearly.
5. “And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home”
a. John understood what Jesus wanted him to do.
b. There was instant and full obedience.
c. He would care for Mary from that hour. His home would be hers from that hour on.
