Another Secret Disciple
Text: John 19: 39 - 40
ANOTHER SECRET DISCIPLE
Joseph of Arimathea was not the only one who took the body of Jesus down. He was accompanied and assisted by Nicodemus, a teacher of the Jesus.
“And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.”
John 19:39-40
1. Who was Nicodemus?
a. He was called “a ruler of the Jews” (John 3:1).
b. He came to Jesus one night (John 3:2).
c. He was an acknowledged teacher of Israel (John 3:10).
2. “Also came”
a. He was at the side of Joseph of Arimathea.
b. Together they brought the body of Jesus down from the cross.
3. A hundred pounds of a mixture of myrrh and aloes
a. Myrrh and aloes formed a sticky resin.
b. This mixture was spread on the body before it was wrapped.
c. A hundred pounds worth was not an insignificant amount.
4. “Then they took the body of Jesus”
a. They may have been fearful.
b. But they found courage to do this for their beloved Master.
i. They would not be known to all.
ii. They could no longer remain as “secret disciples”.
5. “And bound it in strips of linen with the spices”
a. This was not an embalming process.
b. This was just giving Jesus the dignity He deserved at death.
6. “As the custom of the Jews is to bury”
a. Customs were duly looked into.
b. This was the least they could do for their beloved Teacher.
