My Song In The Night (Gospel of John)
我夜间的歌曲 (约翰福音)
A Pharisee Called Nicodemus
Text: John 3:1-3
“There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him,
‘Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that
You do unless God is with him.’
Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he
cannot see the kingdom of God.’”John 3:1-3
A PHARISEE CALLED NICODEMUS
1. A Pharisee
a. This is a religious sect in the days of Jesus.
b. The members practise a strict religious code .
c. They are very insistent about keeping the following:
i. Keeping of the Sabbath Day
ii. Keeping of religious traditions
2. A ruler of the Jews
a. He was a highly acclaimed leader in Israel.
b. He was a member of the highest religious court in Israel called The Sanhedrin Council.
c. They “ruled” Israel with reference to the keeping of their religious beliefs and practices.
3. A meeting with Jesus at night
a. Many of the religious leaders had taken a stand against Jesus.
b. On one occasion Jesus had chased away all the stall holders who had turned the Temple precincts into a market place. This was very disrespectful and Jesus was the only One who dared to challenge them for abusing the Temple grounds (John 2:13-21).
c. Nicodemus may have been concerned about his friends criticising him for meeting up with Jesus.
d. Thus, he came to meet with the Lord in the cover of the night.
e. He began the conversation by praising Jesus and saying that God must be with Him.
4. The surprising response of Jesus
a. Jesus seized the opportunity to teach Nicodemus an important truth that he had not understood.
b. A person must be “born again” if he hopes to enter into the Kingdom of God.
c. A person does not gain entrance into the Kingdom of God by virtue of being a Pharisee.
d. This was an entirely new doctrine to Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews!
