Understanding God
Text: John 3:16-17
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”John 3:16-17
UNDERSTANDING GOD
What is God really like? He was not an austere Holy Being who lived in heaven. Jesus explained to Nicodemus wonderful eternal truths about God that must move the heart!
1. God’s love for mankind
a. This is so wonderfully true. God is a good, gracious and loving Being!
b. God’s love is wonderfully captured in the Scriptures.
“Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love;
Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.”
Jeremiah 31:3
2. “He gave His only begotten Son”
a. The greatest expression of love is God’s gift of His beloved Son.
b. Jesus was anticipating His death on the cross when He uttered these words.
c. The idea behind the word “gave”
i. Jesus would give His life as an atonement for sin.
ii. He would have to take the penalty of sin on His own shoulders.
iii. He would be that special Lamb of God who would take away the sin of the world.
iv. It would mean great suffering for Jesus, God’s only begotten Son.
3. “That whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”
a. Without the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross of Calvary, mankind would not be able to escape the righteous judgment of God.
b. Without the atonement of Christ, man would perish in his sins.
c. But because of believing in Jesus, man would have eternal life instead.
d. The love of God is truly deep and amazing.
4. “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved”
a. That God did not wish to condemn the world had to be carefully stated again and again.
b. God’s desire is not condemnation but salvation.
c. He offers wonderful salvation in and through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
What a wonderful teaching about a great and loving God!
iii.
