The Request for Living Water
Text: John 4:15-18
THE REQUEST FOR LIVING WATER
The Samaritan woman heard what Jesus said and responded positively and immediately.
“Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”
John 4:15
1. The Samaritan woman expressed deep interest in the living water Jesus spoke about.
2. However, she did not seem to fully understand what “living water” truly meant.
3. Her words suggest the following:
a. She thought that the living water was literal.
b. She would like to have this living water somehow.
c. Then she would not need to go to Jacob’s well at Sychar to draw water again and again.
HOW DID JESUS REPLY TO THIS REQUEST?
Jesus knew why the Samaritan woman chose to draw water at noon. This was not the usual time women draw water from Jacob’s well. He had to help her to understand that having salvation also means that it would affect every aspect of life, for example the family.
Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
John 4:16
CANDID ANSWER GIVEN
The Samaritan woman had to give an honest reply to Jesus.
“I have no husband.”
John 4:17a
JESUS’ RESPONSE TO THE WOMAN
“You have well said, ‘I have no husband.’ For you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”
John 4:17-18
1. Before salvation can be given
a).Sins must be dealt with first.
i. Confession must be made.
ii. Pardon for sins must be sought.
iii. The heart must be cleansed.
b. The woman had
i. Five husbands in the past.
ii. The present man was not her husband.
2. The receptacle of living water
a. A receptacle must be cleansed.
b. Before water can be received.
c. The Samaritan woman had to deal with the sin problem in her life.
Then would she be able to understand and appreciate the living water that Jesus would give.
