In Amazement
Text: John 4:19-26
IN AMAZEMENT
She must have been amazed that Jesus knew so much about her life in the past and present. How would a mere stranger know so much about her?
“Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.”
John 4:19
1. Firstly, she noted that Jesus was a Jew from the way He dressed.
2. She was so impressed by Jesus that she surmised that Jesus must be a prophet. Who else but a prophet could have known what her life was like?
THE QUESTION OF THE PLACE OF WORSHIP
Since Jesus was a prophet, she ventured to ask him a difficult theological question that nobody has ever given a reasonable and acceptable answer.
“Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”
John 4:20
Two major difference between the Jews and the Gentiles highlighted:
1. The Scriptures
a. They differed significantly.
b. The Jews accepted the Law, the Prophets and the Writings.
c. The Samaritans had their own set of Scriptures (altered and different).
2. The place of Worship
a. To the Jews
Worship must be offered to the Lord in Jerusalem (2 Chronicles 7).
b. To the Samaritans
Worship was to be offered at Mount Ebal, opposite to Mount Gerizim (Deuteronomy 11:29).
These differences separated Israel and the Samaritans for eons! Nobody had come up with an answer.
A CLASSIC ANSWER
Jesus came up with a tremendously profound answer to the question raised by the Samaritan woman.
1. Worship of God
a. Not in Jerusalem
b. Nor in Mt. Ebal.
2. True and acceptable worship
a. Not in form
b. Nor in locale
c. But in spirit!
God is seeking worshippers who understand genuine worship acceptable to God!
