The Surprise of The Disciples
Text: John 4:27-30
THE SURPRISE OF THE DISCIPLES
The Disciples of Jesus had gone to purchase food in a Samaritan village nearby. They were rather surprised that their Teacher had been talking with a woman (John 4:27). It was well-known among the Rabbis that they did not talk to womenfolk.
THE LOW SOCIAL POSITION OF WOMENFOLK IN ANCIENT DAYS
Women did not enjoy a favourable social position in the first century, even in Israel.
1. Few had any opportunity to have education.
2. They were not even allowed to study the Scriptures.
3. Rabbis were not known to talk to womenfolk in public, let alone a Samaritan woman.
HOLDING BACK THEIR QUESTIONS
The Disciples marvelled that Jesus had broken the norm by speaking to a Samaritan woman. But the disciples did not dare to ask Him why He had been talking to the Samaritan woman (John 4:27).
THE SAMARITAN WOMAN
The Samaritan woman had abandoned her waterpot in her excitement to share with her Samaritan city-dwellers about her discovery of the Messiah. She invited them to see Jesus who had impressed her so much! However, she was very careful about the way she invited them to see the Lord Jesus Christ.
“Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” John 4: 29
1. She had personally heard Jesus disclosing that He was the Christ (The Messiah… John 4:26).
2. She had been duly impressed for the following reason:
a. Jesus had shown her due respect.
b. He had been very polite in His conversation with her.
c. He had seemed like a prophet to her.
i. He had known about her past.
ii. But He had not spoken to her with any condemnation.
d. He had been able to teach her profound truths about God and worship.
e. He had disclosed to her that He was indeed God’s Anointed One… the Christ (The Messiah).
3. Her invitation to her friends.
a. Could Jesus indeed be the Messiah?
b. If they wished, they could find the answer for themselves first-hand.
THE WITNESS OF THE SAMARITAN WOMAN
She had become an unexpected witness for the Lord Jesus Christ!
1. John the Baptiser had been a faithful witness for the Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:7).
2. The men of Samaria were intrigued by what they heard. They made their way to see Jesus for themselves (John 4: 30).
