The First Visit to Cana of Galilee
Text: John 4:46-51
THE FIRST VISIT TO CANA OF GALILEE
The first miracle of Jesus was performed in Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-11). The background of the first miracle is interesting to note.
1. There was a wedding in Cana of Galilee.
2. During the wedding feast, a shortage of wine was shared with Mary, the mother of Jesus.
3. She informed Jesus about the predicament of the wedding couple.
4. The shortage of wine would have led to a major social embarrassment for the family.
5. Jesus graciously performed the first miracle: He turned water into the best wine!
6. He never did inform anyone concerning this miracle.
7. His disciples who had also been invited to the wedding had seen this miracle.
8. Their faith in Jesus was confirmed when they saw the miracle.
THE SECOND VISIT TO CANA OF GALILEE
Jesus paid a second visit to Cana of Galilee. A nobleman who lived in Capernaum had heard that Jesus was in Cana. He rushed to see Jesus because his son was desperately ill and was in fact “at the point of death” (John 4:47).
Many had come to believe in Jesus only because they had seen Him performing sign-miracles. He remarked, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.” John 4:48
1. Signs and wonders were special expressions of grace and mercy.
2. They were not meant to be the only means of finding faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!
THE PLEA OF THE NOBLEMAN
What Jesus said virtually fell on deaf ears. The nobleman cried out, “Sir, come down before my child dies!” John 4:49
1. His focus was the possible death of his son.
2. His fear was that if Jesus did not go with him, his son would surely die.
3. But he had not considered the ministry of Jesus.
a. If He went to every home to heal people, how would He have time to preach the gospel?
b. Jesus had been sent to minister to the whole nation of Israel. How would He be able to do that if He had to accede to every request made?
AN UNUSUAL PROMISE OF A SIGN-MIRACLE
Jesus would not drop everything He came to do in Cana of Galilee. But out of mercy and grace, He would heal the nobleman’s son. He said to the nobleman, “Go your way; your son lives.” John 4:50
The nobleman had no choice but to believe in the word of promise given by Jesus. When he was nearing home his servants said, “Your son lives.” John 4:51
He inquired as to the hour his son was healed. It was the same hour that Jesus had said to him, “Your son lives.” The nobleman and his household found faith in Jesus that day. He learned a valuable lesson that day. The word of the Lord Jesus uttered in Cana of Galilee could heal a very sick boy who lived in Capernaum.
