Another Feast in Jerusalem

Text: John 5:1-8

ANOTHER FEAST IN JERUSALEM      

Jesus attended another Feast in Jerusalem (John 5:1). However, we are not informed as to which Feast this was. Apart from the Day of Atonement, all Feasts were celebratory events. Family and friends often celebrated these Feasts together meaningfully and joyfully.

NOT ALL WERE ABLE TO CELEBRATE FEASTS

In Jerusalem there was a special pool called Bethesda. In this place was gathered “a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed” (John 5:3). The pool appeared to have special healing powers. An angel would stir the pool and whoever went into the pool first would be healed. Many waited for the opportunity to be healed. Those who were at the pool of Bethesda (meaning of the word Bethesda- “House of healing”), were not able to participate in the Feasts that were held at the Temple.

JESUS USED THE OCCASION TO HEAL A MAN WHO HAD BEEN ILL FOR A LONG TIME

Jesus went to Bethesda and there met a man who had an infirmity for thirty-eight years (John 5:5). Jesus went to him particularly and started a conversation with him. Jesus was very good at starting meaningful conversations with people.

Jesus: “Do you want to be made well?” John 5:6

The man with the infirmity: “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” John 5:7

Jesus: “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” John 5:8

A wonderful miracle took place that very moment! “Immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked” John 5:3

NOT EVERYONE APPRECIATED THE SIGN-MIRACLES OF JESUS

We can imagine how happy the man who was healed must have felt. But not everyone appreciated sign miracles… especially if it happened on the Sabbath day!

The Jews

These men were the religious leaders who were always checking if people were keeping or violating the Sabbath. They spoke to the man who was healed: “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.” John 5:10

The man who was healed: “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’”  John 5:11

The Jews: “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” John 5:12

The man: He did not have an answer for the Jews.

1. There were many people in Bethesda on that day.

2. Jesus had withdrawn Himself and had disappeared into the crowd.

A WORD OF EXHORTATION

Jesus found the man who was healed and gave him a firm word of exhortation.

Jesus: “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.” John 5:14

REPORTING TO THE JEWS

The man who was healed informed the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him (John 5:15).

THE ANGER OF THE JEWS

They had even more reason to persecute Jesus. He had broken the Sabbath! They plotted to kill Him (John 5:16).

耶路撒冷的一个节期

耶稣出席了耶路撒冷的一个节期《约翰福音 5: 1》。但是，我们无法得知这是什么节期。除了赎罪日，所有的节期都是喜庆。家人和朋友时常一起有意义地欢庆这些节期 。

不是每个人都能欢庆节期

在耶路撒冷有一个池子叫做毕士大。在这里＂躺着瞎眼的、瘸腿的、血气枯干的许多病人＂《约翰福音 5: 3》。这个池子似乎有神奇的医疗能力。一位天使把池水搅动时，最先进入池水的病人就会痊愈。很多人会等待这个被冶好的机会。在这毕士大池子 （毕士大这名字的意思是 “疗伤之家”）的人们就不能参加殿内举行的庆典。

耶稣用这个场合冶好一位患病许久的人

耶稣在毕士大遇上一个人，病了三十八年《约翰福音 5: 5》。耶稣特地与他交谈。祂善常和人们有意义的交谈。

耶稣问他说：“你要痊愈吗？”《约翰福音 5: 6》

病人回答说：“先生，水动的时候，没有人把我放在池子里，我正去的时候，就有别人比我先下去。”《约翰福音 5: 7》

耶稣对他说：“起来，拿你的褥子走吧！”《约翰福音 5: 8》

在那一刹那神奇的事发生了！那人＂立刻痊愈，就拿起褥子来走了。＂《约翰福音 5: 9》

不是每个人都赞赏耶稣行的神迹

我们可以想像痊愈的人所感受的欣喜。可是，不是每个人都赞赏神迹，
尤其是在安息日！

犹太人

他们是宗教领袖，时时刻刻都在检查人们是否遵守或违反安息日。他们对医好的人说：“今天是安息日，你拿褥子是不可的！”《约翰福音 5: 10》

他却回答说：“那使我痊愈的对我说‘拿你的褥子走吧’。” 《约翰福音 5: 11》

犹太人问他说：“对你说‘拿褥子走’的是什么人？”《约翰福音 5: 12》

那人无法回答犹太人的问题。

1. 那天在毕士大的人很多

2. 耶稣已抽身而去，消失在人群中

劝告的话

后来耶稣遇见祂医好的人，就给他谨慎的劝告。

耶稣说：“你已经痊愈了，不要再犯罪，恐怕你遭遇的更加厉害。”《约翰福音 5: 14》

向犹太人报告

那医好的人就去告诉犹太人，使他痊愈的是耶稣。《约翰福音 5: 15》

犹太人的愤怒

他们因此就更有理由去逼迫耶稣。因衪违反了安息日！

他们策划阴谋要殺祂。《约翰福音 5: 16》
