Further Explanations
Text: John 5:19-21
FURTHER EXPLANATIONS
Jesus sought to do His part in explaining to the Jews what He was doing when He taught the people and when He healed the sick. Jesus was not just a miracle worker. He was the only begotten Son of God!
THE WORKS OF JESUS
Jesus sought to explain the works that He was doing.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.”
John 5:19
1. “Most assuredly, I say to you”
a. This was a special phrase Jesus used frequently.
b. This was uttered to give special assurance.
c. The statement that Jesus was making was absolutely true.
2. The commitment of Jesus as the Son of God
a. He cannot and will not do anything of Himself.
b. He is determined to do only what His Father wishes Him to do.
3. Understanding what the Father is doing
a. He sees carefully what the Father is doing.
b. He understands what His Father wants Him to do.
c. The Son would work in like manner.
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FATHER AND SON
This was not understood by The Jews. Jesus sought to explain the special relationship He sustained with His Heavenly Father.
“For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead, and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.”
John 5:20-21
1. The Father
a. He loves the Son in the most supreme way.
b. He shows the Son all things He is doing in the present and even in the future.
c. He will even show greater works… like raising the dead and giving them life.
2. The Son
He does all the things the Father is doing! He too can give life to whomsoever He wishes!
