A Future Judgement
Text: John 5:28-29
A FUTURE JUDGMENT
Jesus spoke to His hearers about a future judgment. He would also preside over that final Judgment!
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming
In which all who are in the graves will hear His voice
And come forth- those who have done good, to the resurrection of life,
And those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.John 5:28-29
1. “Do not marvel at this”
a. Jesus anticipated the response of His hearers
b. They found it hard to believe what Jesus was saying
c. The word “marvel” can be used in two ways:
i. Positively
The hearer would be so glad that he has heard the voice of the Son of God Himself;
He responds with faith and he is saved.
ii. Negatively
The hearer rejects what Jesus is teaching.
He refuses to recognise Jesus as the anointed Son of Man who has been given all divine authority! He is in danger of the ultimate divine judgment.
2. “For the hour is coming”
a. This is a reference to the end of time
b. In our human understanding this seems to be far, far away
c. To the Lord, it is but an inevitable hour!
3. “All who are in the graves will hear His voice”
a. The word “graves” is a generic word to describe the physically and literally dead
b. They too will hear the voice of the Son of God
4. There are two resurrections
a. “Resurrection of life”
To all who have been granted eternal life will also receive a new resurrection body
b.“Resurrection of condemnation”
They will be judged and will receive condemnation
5. How would God judge?
a. By the deeds of our life.
b. Those who truly believe in the Lord would show that they are God’s children by the good they do in their life! Those who do not believe in God would not be committed to doing good. Those who reject the Light and instead walk in the darkness of evil will receive the judgment of condemnation!
