The Witness of the Scriptures
Text: John 5:38-40
THE WITNESS OF THE SCRIPTURES
Jesus went on to speak of the Scriptures as another witness! This was an amazing thing to state!
“But you do not have His word abiding in you,
because whom He sent, Him you do not believe.
You search the Scriptures, for in them you think
you have eternal life; and these are they which
testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to
Me that you may have life.”John 5:38-40
1. The Four witnesses
a. God the Father
b. John the Baptiser
c. The works of Jesus
d. The Scriptures
2. “You search the Scriptures”
a. The Jews did read the Scriptures.
b. They hoped to find eternal life through reading the Scriptures.
3. The problem underlined
a. The opposing Jews did not really know how to read the Scriptures correctly.
b. They could not comprehend that the Scriptures pointed to the Saviour who could give eternal life.
c. They did not really have the Word of God abiding in their life at all (though the Jews prided themselves in their knowledge of the Scriptures).
4. The prophetic Scriptures that described the promised Anointed One (The Messiah)
a. His miraculous birth. He would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14).
b. He would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).
c. He would be anointed by the Spirit of God (Isaiah 11:2).
d. His ministry described (Isaiah 61:1).
All these texts testified of Jesus! If the Jews had hecked carefully, they would have come to faith in Him!
5. “But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life”
a. They were not willing to come to Jesus humbly to seek eternal life from Him.
b. They refused to acknowledge the power of God that was so obvious in His life and ministry.
