Problems Pointed Out
Text: John 5:41-42
PROBLEMS POINTED OUT
Jesus had to highlight the problems that prevented the Jews from seeking and finding eternal life. Instead, the Jews had strenuously sought to kill Jesus (John 5:16,18). What were their problems?
1. Ignorance
a. They saw Him as a law-breaker (but they were wrong in their assessment (John 5:16).
b. They did not understand that Jesus was the Son of God (John 5:20-23).
c. They did not know that God had anointed Him to be the Supreme Judge (John 5:22).
d. They did not really know the Scriptures very well at all (John 5:38-39).
2. Rejection
a. They had rejected the fourfold witness presented by Jesus.
b. They remained stubborn and unteachable.
A DEEPER PROBLEM REVEALED
Jesus went on to describe why the Jews could not receive Him as the Saviour and Messiah.
“I do not receive honour from men. But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.”
John 5:41-42
1. “I do not receive honour from men”
a.The Jews had developed a strong system.
b. They like to be honoured by people.
c. In return, they will then honour those who speak well of them.
d. Jesus did not honour them.
i. He did not seek their approval.
ii. He did not seek to promote their honour.
iii. In fact, He pointed out their errors and their hypocrisy.
e. He did not seek to receive honour from the Jews.
i. He did not relate to them much.
ii. He refused to have anything to do with their hypocritical ways.
2. “But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.”
a. The Jews did not have the love of God abiding in their hearts!
b. Their actions revealed that they did not have faith in God at all!
