Special Feasts

Text: John 6:4-6

SPECIAL FEASTS

There were three special Feasts that all devout Jews would try and observe, as far as possible, in Jerusalem.

1. The Passover and the Feast of the Unleavened Bread

These were closely related Feasts. Sometimes, one is mentioned, but both are borne in mind. This Feast commemorated the time when God delivered Israel from bondage in Egypt (Exodus 1-14).

2. The Feast of the Tabernacles

This was to commemorate the years Israel spent in the Wilderness (Book of Numbers). The people would build shelters on their rooftops and have special worship services at the Temple (John 7).

3. The Feast of Pentecost

This was essentially a harvest Feast. This was planned so that the nation can remember and praise God for His blessings and His provision (Acts 2).

THE FEAST OF THE PASSOVER

Jesus kept the Feast of the Passover too. This was a special and sacred event that held special meaning for both Israel and Jesus personally.

“Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near.
Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude
coming toward Him, He said to Philip,
‘Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?’”
John 6:4-5

1. “Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near”

a.  This was not quite the Passover itself.
b.  But it was “near”.

2. What was unusual?

a.  Normally, there would be hectic preparation to celebrate the Passover.
b.  The preparation time could take a week or more.

3. The multitudes

a. They were coming to see Jesus instead.
b.  Of course, Jesus had already descended from the mountain.
c. They were not focused on the Passover as much this time round.
d. The signs that Jesus could perform drew the people to Him!

4. Jesus spoke to one of the Disciples called Philip

a. Jesus wanted to feed the multitudes!
b. He raised this question to him,
“Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” John 6:5

3. 许多人
