The Teaching of the Disciples
Text: John 6:5-7
THE TEACHING OF THE DISCIPLES
There were many things that Jesus needed to teach His disciples. They were not trained as Scribes and Pharisees. They were people of humble origin. They had much to learn. The Gospels record for us the many deep and rich lessons Jesus taught His disciples.
THE TESTING OF THE DISCIPLES
Testing is a normal part of the learning process! The testing came in different forms. In this instance, Jesus asked how Philip would resolve the challenge of feeding thousands of people!
“He said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?’
But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do. Philip answered Him, ‘Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.’”John 6:5-7
1. “But this He said to test him”
a. Learning is important.
i. It involves listening (gaining knowledge).
ii. It also involves believing (faith).
iii. But it must also include applying the lesson learned (action).
b. This was a test not only for Philip but all the disciples.
2. “For He Himself knew what He would do”
a. We would, of course, expect Jesus to know what He would do in any circumstance.
b. But He had not revealed to His disciples what He would do next.
3. “Philip answered Him”
a. He was not sure what Jesus expected of him.
b. But he did not have an answer that would resolve the problem of feeding the multitude.
c. Jesus had healed many individuals; He had cast out many demons even.
d. But He had never fed the multitudes!
4. “Two hundred denarii”
a. Philip did a quick calculation.
b. Two hundred denarii would be about 200 days of wages for a common labourer.
c. But even this amount spent would not be able to fully satisfy hungry people!
