An Appeal to Understand Things Spiritually
Text: John 6: 62-63
AN APPEAL TO UNDERSTAND THINGS SPIRITUALLY
The teachings of Jesus were not always easy to comprehend. But a true disciple will persevere and will continue to seek to learn diligently.
“What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend
where He was before?
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing.
The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.”John 6:62-63
1. “The Son of Man”
a) This phrase is full of deep meaning.
b) The following things are to be borne in mind:
i) It may be a reference to simply being a human being (Psalm 8:4).
ii) This is a reference to Jesus taking the form of a Man (John 1:14).
iii) It is also a reference to a Title that God gave to the Messiah (Daniel 7:13-14).
c) Jesus was both fully human and He was the prophesied Messiah as well.
2. “The Son of Man ascend where He was before”
a) Jesus was making a reference to the fact that one day He would return to Heaven.
b) He described it as His “ascent”.
c) This was actually fulfilled shortly after His resurrection from the dead (Acts 1:9-11).
3. “The flesh”
a) This is a reference to the physical body.
b) The encouragement given
i) Not to focus on things material/ physical.
ii) The flesh will one day die.
iii) An external religion will not profit anyone.
4. The spirit
a) The teachings of Jesus are spiritual.
b) His teachings may be comprehended only if they are understood spiritually.
c) The words of Jesus are spirit, that is, to be understood spiritually.
d) They will bring life to the spirit.
Though they may appear to be hard things, they are of great spiritual and eternal worth.
