An Attempt to Correct Misconceptions
Text: John 7: 28-29
AN ATTEMPT TO CORRECT MISCONCEPTIONS
Jesus knew what His hearers were struggling with. They had seen His miracles. They had heard Him preach about the Kingdom of heaven. They were struggling with misconceptions and thus they could not come to full faith in Him as the Messiah. He sought to address these problems.
“Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, ‘You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.’”
John 7:28-29
1. “Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple”
a. The misconceptions had to be addressed.
b. If they were not corrected, these errors would remain.
c. Doubts would continue to hinder faith.
d. Worse, others would be led into error.
e. Salvation in Christ would then not be possible.
2. Addressing the question of knowing Jesus
a. They do know Him.
b. Their knowledge of Jesus and His earthly parentage was not wrong.
c. But that was not the main thing to know!
3. The more important issues
a. Who was the One who sent Jesus?
i. This was the more important piece of knowledge to obtain.
ii. The prophets of old always claimed that God was the One who sent them.
iii. Jesus had always made the same claim – that God the Father had sent Him.
iv. His authority came from the Lord God Himself.
v. He had not sent Himself.
vi. The problem was His hearers did not know God as well as they think they do.
b. “But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me”
i. This was the really important thing to know.
ii. Jesus knew His Father who had sent Him as the Messiah.
As long as they did not really know or believe in God, they would not be able to have true faith!
