Resistance from the Family of Jesus
Text: John 7: 3-5
RESISTANCE FROM THE FAMILY OF JESUS
It may come as a surprise to us that the family of Jesus did not believe Him nor in His mission in life. They challenged Jesus to go to the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem to show everyone His powers so that people may believe in Him.
“His brothers therefore said to Him, ‘Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show Yourself to the world.’ For even His brothers did not believe in Him.”
John 7:3-5
1. His brothers
a. Only Jesus was virgin-born.
i. This was prophesied (Isaiah 7:14).
ii. This prophecy was fulfilled (Luke 1:26-33).
b. Two possibilities
i. These were children from a previous marriage of Joseph (as some scholars have suggested).
ii. These were the natural children of Mary and Joseph after Jesus was born
(the second view is to be preferred).
2. The challenge of the siblings of Jesus
a. They virtually taunted Him.
b. They asked Jesus to show forth His powers that His disciples may see His powers at work.
c. They could not understand why Jesus was not performing more miracles.
3. The problem of unbelief
a. The siblings of Jesus did not believe in Jesus at all… not at this point in time.
b. They even suggested that Jesus should tell the world… He should go global!
c. They had limited understanding of the way God worked!
GOD’S WAY
Does God lead His servants in their life and ministry? How would anyone know how God leads?
1. Depend on God’s gift of the Holy Spirit who will lead and guide effectively.
2. Develop sensitivity to the leading of the Spirit of God.
3. Time spent in prayer and in the Presence of God would make a significant difference in discerning the will of God.
