Failed Plans
Text: John 8: 3-6
FAILED PLANS
The chief priests and Pharisees had tried very hard to entrap Jesus.
1. Through challenging Him with reference to His knowledge of the Law.
2. Through attempting to use the legal arm of the Law to arrest Him.
They had failed to stop Jesus from ministering effectively. They were growing more and more frustrated because of their failure to contain Jesus and to curb His ministry.
A COMPLEX PLAN HATCHED
Jesus showed up at the Temple courageously. He was even teaching openly. He was totally not giving in to attacks of His enemies!
“Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, they said to Him, ‘Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?’ This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.”
John 8:3-6
1. A cruel plot
a. It would have brought shame to the woman brought to Jesus.
b. It was a wicked plan to see if they could entrap Jesus in any way.
2. Citing the law of Moses
a. There was such a Mosaic law.
b. They had sought to apply the letter of the law.
c. They did not honour the spirit of the law.
3. The trap that lay before Jesus
a. If Jesus did not condemn her, they could charge Him with not upholding the law.
b. If He did condemn her, the multitudes may not think so highly of Jesus as a very compassionate Person.
4. How did Jesus respond?
Jesus did the wisest thing! He did not respond at all… not initially. He may have felt indignation against the rulers for setting this trap up! He stooped and wrote on the ground with His finger, ignoring the rulers!
