The Persistence of the Jews
Text: John 8: 7-9
THE PERSISTENCE OF THE JEWS
They were not satisfied with the silence of Jesus. They wanted His spoken opinion on the problem they had presented to Him.
“So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, ‘He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.’ And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last.
John 8:7-9
1. “So when they continued asking Him”
a. They were insistent.
b. They were not going to accept the silence of Jesus as an answer.
2. “He raised Himself up and said to them”
a. Jesus was not running away from the problem.
b. He was ready to give an answer to the Jews.
3. An astonishingly brilliant answer
a. “He who is without sin among you”
i. Who was without sin among the Jews indeed?
ii. There were deep and dark sins that lay hidden in the depths of the heart!
b. “Let him throw a stone at her first”
i. The Jews had come prepared to stone the woman caught in sin.
ii. Jesus challenged the people to throw their stones in judgment if they were without sin.
4. “And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground”
a. What did Jesus write?
b. John did not note what Jesus wrote.
5. “Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one”
a. The oldest among them was not without sin.
b. Once he left, the others followed suit. Their conscience had convicted them of their own sins!
6. The comment of Isaiah on human righteousness comes to mind
“But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are like filthy rags…”
Isaiah 64:6
