Looking Down and Away
Text: John 8: 9-11
LOOKING DOWN AND AWAY
Jesus had looked away from the angry and hostile crowd for good reason. He noted the ugly side of the Jewish rulers but chose not to look at them physically. Their human
spirit, the lamp of the Lord in them, shone on their hearts and they went away quietly, their conscience troubled them, highlighting their sinfulness.
A LOOK OF COMPASSION
The noise of feet shuffling away brought about a special sense of quietness. Jesus then looked up and spoke to the woman who was brought to Him.
“And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, ‘Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?’ She said. ‘No one, Lord.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.’
John 8:9b-11
1. “And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst”
a. The clamouring had died down completely.
b. The heart was convicted of sins, large and small.
c. Only two people were there.
i. Jesus the sinless Saviour.
ii. The woman who cowered because of the public humiliation.
2. “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?”
a. Tender questions raised
i. To help her.
ii. To bring some measure of comfort.
b. No condemnation
i. The accusers were not without sin and shame.
ii. Human self-righteousness always brings deep hurt.
iii. But there can be no condemnation of this kind, for all have sinned before God.
3. A short but meaningful conversation
a. With deep relief, the woman realised what Jesus did for her.
b. With deep gratitude, she understood and appreciated what Jesus said to her.
c. He had not come to condemn but to save and to restore fully.
