The Darkness That is in the World
Text: John 8:12
THE DARKNESS THAT IS IN THE WORLD
Isaiah described the land of Galilee as one filled with darkness (Isaiah 9:1-2). But darkness was not confined to just the region of Galilee. It was found everywhere, including Jerusalem, the so-called spiritual capital of Judea.
It was darkness that caused the religious leaders to drag a woman to Jesus, and demanding a response from Him! Darkness was everywhere, sin was allowed to reign!
THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
What is the answer to sin’s darkness? Jesus spoke plainly and earnestly to all who would listen.
“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’”
John 8:12
1. “Then Jesus spoke to them again”
a. There were on-lookers and there were His disciples too.
b. These may have gathered to see what would happen when the Jews confronted Jesus.
c. They had seen the religious leaders walk away in quiet shame.
d. They had seen how the Lord Jesus spoke with compassion to the woman.
2. “I am the light of the world”
a. Jesus could not be drawn into the darkness of the world and of the Jews.
b. The darkness was immediately dispelled when it came into contact with the Light.
c. Light will always prevail over darkness.
3. “He who follows Me”
a. This was a word of great encouragement.
b. This was also a word of invitation to all who heard Him.
c. The challenge to follow Jesus is truly heart-warming and uplifting.
4. “Shall not walk in darkness”
a. Sin is often symbolised by darkness.
b. He who follows Jesus closely need not walk in the darkness of sin.
c. What a wonderful promise that we can walk in the light than walk in darkness!
5. “But have the light of life”
a. Jesus is the Light of the world.
b. He is also the Giver of light.
And the light He gives will last us a life-time, preventing darkness that threatens to engulf.
