The Problem of Being Judgmental
Text: John 8: 15-16
THE PROBLEM OF BEING JUDGMENTAL
Judging is a thing we do every day. There is a huge difference between “judging” and being “judgmental”. Jesus pointed out the difference to the Jews who were always seeking to find fault with Him. Features of being “judgmental”.
1. Possession of a wrong and wicked spirit.
a. Finding fault
b. Seeking to condemn
2. Seeing faults even when there may be none.
a. Beginning with the conclusion that Jesus was wrong.
b. Searching for things to blame Jesus with.
AN ANALYSIS OF THE JEWS
Jesus had to point out certain features of the way in which the Pharisees judged people.
“You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.”
John 8:15-16
1. “You judge according to the flesh”
a. The Jews had a system of judging people.
b. That system was “of the flesh”.
i. They depended on their carnal instincts for they looked mostly at the external.
ii. They based much on their feelings and dispositions.
c. This system was
i. Flawed.
ii. Inaccurate and thus prone to error.
2. “I judge no one”
a. Jesus did not possess a judgmental spirit.
b. He sought to teach and to guide those who were in darkness.
3. “And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true”
This was an important statement Jesus had to make! His judgment is always totally true.
4. “For I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me”
Jesus was most conscious of the Presence of His Father who sent Him. He would never judge unless the Father had confirmed for Him what is good, true and righteous!
