When Darkness Obscures Spiritual Understanding
Text: John 8: 25-27
WHEN DARKNESS OBSCURES SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING
Jesus used different methods to help the Jews to understand basic spiritual truths. Yet the sad reality was that they did not have much light to comprehend spiritual truths.
“Then they said to Him, ‘Who are You?’ And Jesus said to them, ‘Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning. I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him.’ They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father.”
John 8:25-27
1. A direct question was raised to Jesus: “Who are You?”
a. Were the Jews really sincere when they raised this direct question?
b. Were they really interested in finding the answer?
2. Jesus said to them:
a. “Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning”
i. Jesus had been very clear as to who He was and what He came to do.
ii. He had also been very consistent in His life and ministry.
b. Two things may be highlighted:
i. The bread from heaven
“I am the bread of life.” John 6:35
ii. The light of the world
“I am the light of the world.” John 8:12
3. “I have many things to say and to judge concerning you”
a. Jesus could have pointed out their hypocrisy.
b. He could have highlighted their evilness.
c. But He had sought to be most gracious.
4. His claim was to be sent from His Father
a. He had been sent by His Father.
b. He speaks of the Father as One who is true.
c. His word (His teachings) were from His Father in heaven.
5. “They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father”
They had not understood at the beginning. There had been no progress in spiritual enlightenment too!
