A Cryptic and Grim Prophecy
Text: John 8:28
A CRYPTIC AND GRIM PROPHECY
Jesus had spoken about who He was and why He had come to earth. But His words unfortunately went unheeded. Once again, He sought to reach His hearers, this time by giving a cryptic and grim prophecy of an event that would happen before too long.
“Then Jesus said to them, ‘When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things.’”
John 8:28
1. “When you lift up the Son of Man”
a. The term “Son of Man” was a title that was used to describe the Messiah (Daniel 7:13).
b. He would be given an everlasting Kingdom (Daniel 7:14).
c. The Son of Man would be “lifted up” one day.
i. This was a grim picture of how Jesus would die.
ii. He would be crucified; He would be “lifted up”.
2. “Then you will know that I am He”
a. Realisation would come.
b. They will then know that Jesus had come to fulfil God’s plan of redemption.
3. “And that I do nothing of Myself”
a. Jesus had said this before.
b. He would never seek to do His own will.
c. Neither would He speak a word from Himself.
4. “But as My Father taught Me”
a. There was such a close relationship between Father and Son.
b. Jesus had listened to His Father’s teaching at all times.
c. The Father had taught, and the Son had listened and had taught according to His Father’s will.
5. “I speak these things”
a. What Jesus said was like what the ancient prophets preached.
b. The prophetic messages came from the Lord God.
c. Jesus was the Son of Man who had been taught by His Father.
d. What He spoke reflected what His Father would have Him say.
Gently and clearly Jesus sought to explain who He was and how He taught!
