The Insistence of the Jews
Text: John 8: 39-40
THE INSISTENCE OF THE JEWS
The Jews resisted what Jesus said to them. They insisted that they were indeed the descendants of Abraham and they had inherited all the rights and privileges God had promised to Abraham and his heirs.
“They answered and said to Him, ‘Abraham is our father.’Jesus said to them, ‘If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this.’”
John 8:39-40
1. “Abraham is our father”
a. This was the claim of the Jews.
b. This was their insistence.
c. And being heirs of Abraham, they were entitled to all the blessings God had promised.
2. “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham”
a. There should be more expected from the true children of Abraham.
b. They should be showing similar character traits of Abraham.
i. There should be faith in God evidenced.
ii. There should be a close friendship (relationship) with God.
iii. There should be good moral behaviour.
3. “But now you seek to kill Me”
a. The murderous intentions of the Jews were all too evident.
b. They had plotted to slay Jesus.
c. This fact could not be denied.
4. “A Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God”
a. Jesus had spoken nothing but the truth.
b. His source of truth was from God Himself.
c. But the Jews had rejected what Jesus taught.
5. “Abraham did not do this”
a. Abraham embraced the truth that God gave to him.
b. He never had a murderous inclination.
How could the Jews insist that they were the descendants of Abraham if their deeds were so sinful?
