A Solemn Declaration
Text: John 8: 41
A SOLEMN DECLARATION
Jesus knew the hearts of the Jews. Their claim of Abraham as their father was merely racial. They could not rightly claim that they were the children of Abraham spiritually. Between the two, the spiritual relationship was of greater importance!
A CLAIM TO BE GOD’S CHILDREN
The Jews in their debate with Jesus went on to claim that they were not just Abraham’s children. They saw themselves as the children of God! The LORD was their Father!
“‘You do the deeds of your father.’ Then they said to Him, ‘We were not born of fornication;
we have one Father – God.’”John 8:41
1. A plain statement from Jesus
a. “You do the deeds of your father.”
b. Jesus was not debating their ancestry (that they were the descendants of Abraham).
c. He was addressing their deeds.
d. The deeds of the Jews:
i. They were not the deeds of their father Abraham.
ii. Who then was their father?
2. “Then they said to Him”
a. The Jews did not let Jesus go any further.
b. They responded very swiftly and angrily to what Jesus said.
3. “We were not born of fornication”
a. They insisted they were “pure bred”.
b. They were of the stock of Abraham and Sarah.
c. The Jews knew that Abraham had other wives and other children.
d. Their claim was that they were not children who came from the other wives of Abraham.
e. They clung to this ancestry very fiercely.
4. “We have one Father – God”
a. The Jews then went on to claim that God was their Father.
b. This was an even stronger declaration.
c. If they were already children of God, they did not need Jesus to give them the right to be called sons!
