The Question of Believing in Jesus
Text: John 8: 45-47
THE QUESTION OF BELIEVING IN JESUS
What would it take for people to come to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ? Jesus did everything possible for people to come to have faith in Him!
1. He preached simple but powerful messages.
2. He taught and explained what people found hard to understand.
3. He performed miracles that were truly astonishing.
4. He offered friendship with much kindness.
What more could be done? But still there were some who persisted in not believing. Was it a matter of simply not being able to understand? Or was it something else? Jesus had this to say to them.
RESPONDING TO THE TRUTH PROCLAIMED
Jesus explained why the Jews found it next to impossible to believe in Him and the truth He proclaimed.
“But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”
John 8:45-47
1. “But because I tell the truth”
a. This was Jesus’ commitment.
b. He was very consistent in teaching the truth.
2. “Which of you convicts Me of sin”
a. Could the people find fault with His teaching?
b. Could He have sinned and made His teaching difficult to believe in?
c. The fact was that Jesus had never sinned!
3. “Why do you not believe Me”
a. Not because Jesus’ teaching was difficult to comprehend.
b. Not because Jesus was an unskilled Teacher.
c. One reason highlighted:
i. They were not of God.
ii. If they were of God, they would have no difficulty in understanding and believing.
iii. Despite their claims that they knew God, the truth was that they were not of God!
