Blind but Not Deaf
Text: John 9:3
BLIND BUT NOT DEAF
The Disciples of Jesus might well have raised this question to Jesus out loud. The man was born blind, but he was not deaf! Sometimes careless remarks can be hurtful.
1. The blind man was already suffering because of his blindness… all his life!
2. The question as to why he was blind was a painful and difficult thing to understand!
3. The disciples still had much to learn about being sensitive and compassionate in ministry.
A BRIEF BUT IMPORTANT ANSWER
Jesus had to answer His disciples immediately. He must have felt the hurt that the blind man felt.
“Jesus answered, ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.’”
John 9:3
1. Jesus answered
a) Openly
b) Clearly
c) To all who were standing around.
i) His disciples
ii) The blind man
iii) The crowd
2. The question of sin
a) The blindness of this man was not caused by his personal sins.
b) Nor were the sins of the parents visited on the blind man.
c) The above were common opinions held by many.
d) But it is wrong to assume that all illnesses are caused by sin!
3. What comfort to the heart
a) How comforting those words must have sounded to the blind man.
b) His blindness was not God’s judgment on anyone’s sin!
4. “But that the works of God should be revealed in him”
a) These were wonderful words that must bring home to the most despairing of heart.
b) But what did Jesus mean when He spoke about “the works of God?
c) Was it possible that Jesus could do a special work of God in his life?
How wonderful if these words were true!
