Puzzled and Astonished Neighbours
Text: John 9: 13-17
PUZZLED AND ASTONISHED NEIGHBOURS
The neighbours had listened to the testimony of the former blind man with astonishment. The following facts must be borne in mind:
1. A notable miracle had been performed on the former blind beggar.
2. Jesus was the name that was given by the former blind man.
3. This miracle happened on the Sabbath!
BRINGING THE FORMER BLIND MAN TO THE PHARISEES
The reaction to the former blind man was startling. Instead of being really happy for their neighbour for he now had eyes to see, they brought him to the Pharisees. The conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees was by now well-known!
“They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees. Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, ‘He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.’”
John 9:13-15
1. The roles the Pharisees played
a) They were the ones who interpreted events.
b) Their word was rather decisive.
c) They were held in awe by the multitudes.
2. The query of the Pharisees
a) They wanted the former blind man to explain this miracle in his own words.
b) At the back of their mind, they were already negatively disposed towards Jesus.
3. The testimony of the former blind beggar
a) His testimony was now much briefer.
b) He did not identify the Saviour who healed him.
c) He did not want Jesus to be implicated in any way and by any means.
d) Three simple descriptive sentences concerning the performance of this notable miracle.
i) He put clay on my eyes,
ii) I washed.
iii) Now I see.
4. A sharp and wise new believer
The former blind man had learned very quickly. He would bear witness for Jesus amidst a hostile environment.
