Other Sheep
Text: John 10: 16
OTHER SHEEP
Jesus must have surprised all His hearers when He went on to speak of “other sheep”.
“And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.”
John 10:16
1. “And other sheep I have which are not of this fold”
a. Israel in the days of Jesus
i. Despised Samaritans.
ii. They also despised Gentiles.
b. In the plan of Jesus
i. They are simply “other sheep”.
ii. They were not presently in the fold yet.
2. “Them also I must bring”
a. The Samaritans were brought into the fold by Philip the evangelist (Acts 8).
b. God raised Paul to become an apostle to the Gentiles (Acts 13:46-47).
c. They too were brought into the same sheepfold of the good Shepherd.
3. “And they will hear My voice”
a. Both Samaritans and Gentiles would come to faith in Jesus too.
b. And they too would hear His voice.
c. And He would become “that great Shepherd of the sheep” (Hebrews 13:20).
4. “And there will be one flock and one shepherd”
a. This is a beautiful teaching of Jesus.
b. This is in fact a fulfilment of a prophecy in the Book of Ezekiel.
“I will establish one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them- My servant David. He shall feed them and be their shepherd.”
Ezekiel 34:23
5. A plan established by God
a. “My servant David”
This is a Messianic kingly title. It describes Jesus as “The Son of David”.
b. Jesus is the appointed Shepherd.
c. He will feed His sheep faithfully and they would never be in want.
