The Sin of Blasphemy
Text: John 10: 33
THE SIN OF BLASPHEMY
The Jews replied Jesus’ question. They were angry because they believed Jesus blasphemed!
“The Jews answered Him, saying, ‘For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.’”
John 10:33
1. “The Jews answered Him”
a. They responded quickly.
b. Their response was impulsive.
c. They did not examine carefully what Jesus had said.
d. They had no authority to throw stones; the death penalty cannot be determined till everything had been properly examined by the Sanhedrin Council. This process would have taken days.
2. “For a good work we do not stone You”
a. At least there was admission concerning the works of Jesus.
b. They could not deny that there were indeed “good work”.
c. They could not stone Him for the good work that He had done.
3. “But for blasphemy”
a. Blasphemy was one of the sins that could result in death by stoning.
b. There was an incident that was recorded in Leviticus 24 that described the meting of the death penalty for a blasphemer (Leviticus 24:10-16).
c. But this was really an isolated case.
d. The following things must be done:
i. The supposed blasphemer must be put into custody first (Leviticus 24:12).
ii. The mind of the LORD was sought and His word revealed (Leviticus 24:12).
iii. The LORD Himself must give the judgment for the death penalty (Leviticus 24:13-16).
iv. The whole congregation must stone the blasphemer (Leviticus 24:16).
e. But none of the above procedures was followed by the Jews!
4. “And because You, being a Man, make Yourself God”
a. The Jews responded only to the words of Jesus when He spoke of Oneness with God.
b. They did not follow His line of reasoning at all.
c. To them, Jesus was only a Man, and cannot use the word “God” to speak of Himself at any time
