Appealing to the Miraculous Works
Text: John 10: 37-39
APPEALING TO THE MIRACULOUS WORKS
Once again, Jesus appealed to the many works that He had done. Would the Jews not respond to the significance of such powerful signs?
“‘If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe
that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.’ Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.”John 10:37-39
1. Jesus offered to the Jews a clear line of reasoning
a. “If I do not do the works of My Father”
i. They may examine His works thoroughly.
ii. They may ask Him any number of questions.
iii. If it can be proven that Jesus was not doing the works of God the Father.
b. “Do not believe Me”
i. The Jews need not believe in Jesus if He did not do the works of His Father.
ii. Jesus would not compel anyone to have faith in Him if He had failed to do His Father’s will.
2. “But if I do, though you do not believe Me”
a. Jesus knew that the Jews did not believe in Him.
b. He sought to show them how they may have faith in Him through studying His works.
3. “Believe the works”
a. The works of Jesus were really signs from God.
b. These miracles were not common deeds.
c. The works of Jesus truly compels belief, that is, faith.
4. “That you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him”
a. Knowledge is essential.
b. Knowledge of the works of Jesus will help them to believe in Him.
c. The Father was truly in Jesus; and the Lord Jesus was in the Father!
5. “Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand”
The Jews reacted typically. They rejected this explanation given. Instead they sought to arrest Jesus, but He escaped out of their clutches.
