Planning To Return To Their Old Trade
Text: John 21: 3
PLANNING TO RETURN TO THEIR OLD TRADE
Though the faith of the disciples had been restored, they were still uncertain as to how they should proceed. Peter who was the natural leader announced his decision to return to his old fishing trade.
“Simon Peter said to them, ‘I am going fishing.’ They said to him, ‘We are going with you also.’ They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.”
John 21:3
1. “Simon Peter said to them, ‘I am going fishing’”
a. Peter was not speaking about having a bit of a break.
b. He was saying that he was returning to his former profession.
c. He was a fisherman (Matthew 4:18).
2. “They said to him, ‘We are going with you also’”
a. Peter did not realize fully how his decision would affect his friends.
b. They were friends as fishermen.
c. They were also fellow-disciples.
d. They decided that they too would return with Peter to their old trade.
3. “They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing”
a. Fishing was done in the night in those days.
b. One way of fishing was to let down their nets to trawl for the fish.
c. There was no particular reason why they should catch nothing.
d. But the sad reality was that they “caught nothing”.
WHY DID THE DISCIPLES RETURN TO THEIR OWN TRADE
There are a number of possible reasons:
1. They missed the leadership of the Lord Jesus.
a. He had always organized everything.
b. Without His Presence, they did not know what to do next.
2. They were still lacking the following:
a. A clear vision of what they were to do.
b. A powerful faith in the Lord to help fill the emptiness and lack of direction in their lives.
