Recognizing Jesus
Text: John 21: 7
RECOGNIZING JESUS
The disciples were excited in seeing this great catch of fish. It suddenly dawned on one of the fishermen that this was nothing less than a miracle. The Person who had performed many mighty miracles was standing at the seashore!
“Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’ Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea.”
John 21:7
1. “Therefore the disciple whom Jesus loved”
a. This is a reference to John who wrote this Gospel.
b. This was the way he described himself.
i. It was a description that showed his humility.
ii. It was a description that described his relationship with Jesus.
iii. He was especially loved by the Lord Jesus.
2. “Said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord’”
a. John realized that the great catch of fish was a miracle.
b. As a fisherman he knew that this great catch was an impossibility unless it was a miracle.
c. He must have remembered the previous miracle.
d. He concluded that the Person who spoke to them was not a passer-by
It was none other than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
e. He had come in search of His disciples.
He had known of their decision to return to their fishing trade and He had sought and found them.
3. “Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea”
a. Peter must have agreed that John was right.
b. The Lord had come to them… yet again.
c. Dressed in inner garments:
i. This was normal for people who were out in the sea fishing.
ii. But it would not be appropriate to appear before the Lord wearing only inner garments.
d. Putting on outer garment:
i. It would be appropriate to be fully dressed to meet the Lord.
ii. But what was puzzling was why Peter would plunge into the sea fully clothed!
iii. This response showed Peter as he had always been. He was very impulsive.
