A Quiet Word With Simon Peter
Text: John 21: 15
A QUIET WORD WITH SIMON PETER
After the breakfast, Jesus spoke to Peter. He knew that Peter had a lot of influence over the other disciples. He spoke to Peter candidly.
“So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these?’ He said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.’ He said to him, ‘Feed My lambs.’”
John 21:15
1. “So when they had eaten breakfast”
a. Jesus patiently waited for the disciples to have the breakfast He had prepared for them.
He wanted them to enjoy the food and the fellowship.
b. This would also be a good time for them to feel more settled in His company.
2. “Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these”
a. Simon
i. When Simon was first introduced to the Lord Jesus, He called him “Peter”
The name “Peter” means “a rock”.
ii. Jesus did not call him “Peter” this time round.
b. Simon, son of Jonah
i. This would be a very formal way of addressing Peter.
This would be the usual address if you were to speak to someone for the first time.
ii. A sense of formality would be appropriate.
c. “Do you love me?”
i. It might have been a little tough for Peter to have Jesus speak to him in this candid manner.
ii. Jesus asked Peter if he really loved Him?
d. “More than these”
i. The word “these” is not a reference to the other disciples.
ii. It is a reference to what Peter had loved… his old fishing trade and all that accompanied it.
3. “He said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.’”
a. Peter answered as honestly as he could for he knew that Jesus was able to look into his heart.
b. He did love Jesus! How could he not love Jesus after having been with Him for the past few years?
But he did not dare to say that he loved Jesus “more than these”.
Peter was now more conscious of how he spoke. He had failed Jesus very badly by denying Him!
4. “And He said to him, ‘Feed My lambs’”
Jesus accepted Peter’s answer. He entrusted Peter with the feeding of the lambs of His flock (young believers).
