"The vision of Obadiah"

Text: Obadiah 1a

VISIONS FROM THE LORD

All true prophets must be able to speak of having “a vision” or “a word from the Lord”. Without a vision, they would not be able to prophesy authoritatively as His servants.

“The vision of Obadiah.
Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom
(We have heard a report from the LORD,
And a messenger has been sent among the nations, saying
‘Arise, and let us rise up against her for battle’):”
Obadiah 1

1. “The vision of Obadiah”

a) This would have to be claimed by Obadiah.
b) What this would do:
i) It would give him authentication.
ii) It would give him authority.
iii) It would give him information (content).
iv) It would give him an imperative to speak for the Lord.
v) It would identify Obadiah as a true prophet of God.

2. “Thus says the Lord”

a) The Lord is the source of this word.
b) Obadiah would be His spokesman, His servant.
c) He is a messenger of the Lord.
d) He is not the originator of this message he is proclaiming.

EDOM

The first word that God spoke concerning Edom was when he was in the womb of his mother with his twin brother, Jacob. Rebekah had been troubled by her difficult pregnancy and had inquired of the Lord. God graciously replied and said to her,

“Two nations are in your womb,
Two peoples shall be separated from your body;
One people shall be stronger than the other,
And the older shall serve the younger.”
Genesis 25:23

1. Esau was the name of the older twin.

2. He would be blessed by the Lord.

a) He would become a nation.
b) He would one day become “a people”.

Esau began life with a promise of blessing from the Lord God! It was a good and auspicious start!
