Text: Philippians 2:9

GOD’S RESPONSE TO JESUS

How did God respond to Jesus? The following text gives us the answer.

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him
and given Him the name which is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,
and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.”

Philippians 2:9-11

1. “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him”

a) “Therefore”
This inferential particle introduces the result of the humbling of Jesus when He came to earth.
b) In response to Christ’s humility, God exalted Him most highly.
c) The word “exalted” (Greek “Huperupsosen” suggests “hyper-exaltation”).

2. “And given Him the name which is above every name”

a) God has bestowed the greatest of honour to Jesus.
b) The word “name” has the following connotations:-
i) Title
ii) Power
iii) Authority
c) The verb “gave” comes from the word “grace” (Greek “charizomai”).
i) This word was used in Philippians 1:29.
ii) God’s giving of this high honour to Jesus effectively demonstrates the magnificence of His grace.

3. “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow”

a) All are to bow to the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) The reference to heaven, earth and beneath the earth is to emphasise extent of the authority God has graciously bestowed on the Lord Jesus Christ.

4. “And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father”

a) This “confession” does not necessarily reflect faith in Jesus, only acknowledgment!
b) When Christ is duly exalted, it does not detract from the glory of God! It redounds to His glory!
