"The peace of God..."

Text: Philippians 4:7

THE PEACE OF GOD

The theme of “Peace” is important in theology and in our personal life. They are actually closely related. Doctrinally, we have peace with God when we stand justified before God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

1. Peace with God (Romans 5:1)

a) There is now no enmity.
b) We have been reconciled.
c) We stand justified before God, fully forgiven.
d) This is an important doctrine.

2. Personal peace in life

a) This is also possible.
b) It is a gift from God in answer to our feelings of anxiety.

A SPECIAL GIFT NOT TO BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED

The Apostle Paul wrote to encourage the Philippians to look out for the special peace of God that He would send as an answer to the problem of anxiety.

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
Will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:7

1. “The peace of God”

a) This is not generated by positive thinking.
b) The source of this peace is from God Himself.

2. A special description of this peace

a) It surpasses (Greek “huperecho”).
b) It is used qualitatively.
c) It far exceeds all that the mind can think.
d) It is a peace that cannot be explained in human terms.

3. What this peace of God can do

a) It will guard us.
i) The heart that feels anxious.
ii) The mind that may be threatened with dark despair.
b) It will protect our hearts and minds from the consequences of anxiety.
