Day 89 – Psalm 102

“I wither away like grass.” Psalm 102:11b

CONSEQUENCES OF FEELING PROLONGED DISTRESS

Severe and adverse consequences must be expected if one dwells on morose thoughts!

“My days are like a shadow that lengthens,
And I wither away like grass.
But You, O LORD, shall endure forever,
And the remembrance of Your name to all generations.”
Psalm 102:11-12

1. Span of life

a) The psalmist described it in terms of mere “days”.
b) And these days were compared to shadows that lengthen.
i) In the ancient days one could tell the time of the day by looking at the shadows cast by a stick placed on the ground.
ii) The evening would have a lengthened shadow.
iii) The psalmist felt that he had come to the end of his span of life on earth.

2. Quality of life

a) He compared his life to mere “grass”.
b) Worse, he felt that he was withering away like grass.

3. In direct contrast

a) God’s existence was eternal.
b) He shall ever endure.
c) His name shall always be remembered “to all generations”.

4. The sense of distress at this stage

a) This is dark distress.
b) The psalmist is virtually at the point of despair.
c) He hardly sees any future for his personal life.
