Day 91 – Psalm 102

“So the nations shall fear the name of the LORD…” Psalm 102:15a

THE NAME OF THE LORD

The psalmist was correct in his concern and his desire to see God’s name held in reverence. He could not see how God’s name could ever be held in great esteem if Zion was downtrodden by enemies.

“So the nations shall fear the name of the LORD,
And all the kings of the earth Your glory.
For the LORD shall build up Zion;
He shall appear in His glory.”
Psalm 102:15-16

1. The nations and all the kings of the earth

a) These did not have a natural “fear of the name of the LORD”.
b) Many of the nations gave trouble to Zion.

2. The psalmist’s “solution”

a) Let God build Zion up.
b) Let God’s glory be seen in the way He builds up the nation.
i) Then the nations will fear His name.
ii) And the kings of the earth will stand in awe of the glory of God.

3. The psalmist’s faith and hope

a) He expressed confident hope that God would build Zion up.
b) He further expressed belief that the Lord Himself would reveal His glorious Being in Zion.

4. What was the basis of this hope and confidence?

a) Much of this confidence may be traced to what God said to King Solomon (2 Chronicles 7:12-22).
b) God did say that He had chosen Jerusalem as His “house of sacrifice” (2 Chronicles 7:12).
c) The psalmist would also have been aware of the solemn words of warning contained in the text of 2 Chronicles 7:12-22. If God’s people forsook Him and turned to other gods, then He would bring great calamity to the nation (2 Chronicles 7:19-22).
