THE AWESOME GREATNESS OF GOD

How does one even begin to describe the greatness of God? The psalmist (undisclosed author) makes the following attempt to describe the greatness of God.

“He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters,
Who makes the clouds His chariot,
Who walks on the wings of the wind,
Who makes His angels spirits,
His ministers a flame of fire.”
Psalm 104:3-4

1. “He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters”

a) This is an architectural reference.
b) It is as if the psalmist is trying to describe the majesty of God by speaking of His house.
i) A great Person must own a great house.
ii) A great house has upper chambers.
iii) God’s upper chambers are “in the waters”.
iv) This is to create a sense of profundity in the psalmist’s attempt to describe God’s greatness.

2. Other profound thoughts of God

a) The clouds are God’s chariots.
b) He walks on the wings of the wind.
c) He is the Creator of angels.
i) He creates them as spirit-beings.
ii) They minister before the Lord.
iii) They may be compared to flames of fire.
iv) They do His bidding with the purest of zeal (symbol of “fire”).
