Day 144 – Psalm 106

“Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD?” Psalm 106:2a

A HINT AT THE THEME OF THE PSALM

The writer hints at the theme of Psalm 106 in the following text. Being a historical psalm the writer would of course focus on the mighty historical deeds of God in the history of Israel.

“Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD?
Who can declare all His praise?
Blessed are those who keep justice,
And he who does righteousness at all times!”
Psalm 106:2-3

1. Rhetorical questions

The psalmist raised up two rhetorical questions:-

a) Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord?
b) Who can utter His praise?

2. What are rhetorical questions?

a) It is essentially a literary device.
b) The answers are so obvious, that none are offered (as it is here).

3. The mighty acts of God

a) These were well recorded in the books of Moses (Genesis- Deuteronomy).
b) These acts of God were well rehearsed in Psalm 105.

4. “Blessed are those who keep justice”

a) But wherein is the blessing?
b) The blessing does not lie in being able to recite the mighty acts of God.
c) The real blessing is with those who keep justice because they know the Lord and His laws.

5. “And he who does righteousness at all times”

a) The person who truly understands God’s mighty acts would desire to walk before Him.
b) He would always aspire to “do righteousness at all times”. His faith in God would be well-reflected in consistent practical righteousness.
