Day 161 – Psalm 106

“Therefore He raised His hand in an oath against them…” Psalm 106:26a

CONSEQUENCES OF DESPISING THE LAND

What are the consequences of despising the land and refusing to heed God’s word? Did the children of Israel think that they could carry on sinning against God so grievously and imagine that there would be no consequences?

“Therefore He raised His hand in an oath against them,
To overthrow them in the wilderness,
To overthrow their descendants among the nations,
And to scatter them in the lands.”
Psalm 106:26-27

1. “Therefore He raised His hand in an oath against them”

a) “Therefore”
This word suggests that this consequence arose from the grave sin of despising God’s gift of the Promised Land (Psalm 106:24).
b) “To overthrow them in the wilderness” (Numbers 13-14)
i) The generation that came out of Egypt would not be able to enter the Promised Land.
ii) That generation would have to wander in the Wilderness for 40 years.
iii) They would all perish during the Wilderness years.
c) The redemptive factor
i) Only Joshua and Caleb would survive the Wilderness years.
ii) Joshua would lead the children of Israel to conquer the land of Canaan.
iii) The second generation would be given the grace to go into the Promised Land and inherit it.

2. “To overthrow their descendants among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands”

a) This statement is to be read as a strong word of warning.
b) The next generation must learn from the mistakes of their fathers.
c) They must not repeat the same mistakes and sin against God by complaining and despising God’s word.
d) To walk in the path of sin would result in tragic consequences; they would be scattered!
