Day 171 – Psalm 106

“Nevertheless He regarded their affliction…” Psalm 106:44a

THE NATURE OF GOD

One of the most significant core texts about the nature of God must be this word that was revealed to Moses.

“The LORD, the LORD God,
merciful and gracious, longsuffering,
and abounding in goodness and truth.”
Exodus 34:6

THE NATURE OF GOD TESTED

The children of Israel sorely tested the nature of God. In Psalm 106, the psalmist took pains to describe the many times the children of Israel grievously sinned against God. Yet, somehow, God found it in Himself to hear the prayers of the errant children of Israel.

“Nevertheless He regarded their affliction,
When He heard their cry.”
Psalm 106:44

1. “Nevertheless”

a) This word notes the fact that the children of Israel had sinned against God grievously.
b) Despite their sinfulness, His heart was touched by their cries.

2. “He regarded their affliction”

a) The children of Israel was under severe oppression in the time of the Judges.
b) He felt with them in their hour of affliction.
c) He regarded their affliction.

An amazingly gracious gesture on God’s part!

3. “When He heard their cry”

a) It was up to the children of Israel to return to God.
b) It was necessary for them to repent from their folly of turning away from God to worship idols.
c) If they were to cry out to God, their cries would not go unheard and unanswered.
d) God graciously heard their cries and He would send deliverers to rescue them from oppression from their enemies (Judges 2:16; 6:7-8).

The mercies of God were extended to the children of Israel for centuries! Yet, sadly, the children of Israel failed to appreciate the covenant relationship they had with God.
