Day 174 – Psalm 106

“Save us, O LORD our God…” Psalm 106:47a

THE DAYS OF THE PSALMIST

We are not able to exactly determine when the psalmist wrote this psalm. It is likely that Israel was in trouble and needed Divine help.

“Save us, O LORD our God,
And gather us from among the Gentiles,
To give thanks to Your holy name,
To triumph in Your praise.”
Psalm 106:47

1. Intimation of the times of the psalmist

a) Israel was “among the Gentiles”.
i) This phrase is best read and understood in the light of Psalm 106:41a.
ii) The nation was given to the hand of the Gentiles by the Lord.
b) Israel needed to be saved by the Lord.
i) The psalmist thus offered this intercessory prayer.
ii) He stood in the breach to plead on behalf of the nation.

2. On what basis would the psalmist plead with the Lord for deliverance?

a) On the basis of the covenant that God had given to Israel (Psalm 106:45a).
b) On the basis of the fact that the Lord was their Covenant-God (Exodus 6:1-7).
c) On the basis that God had shown Israel mercy time and time again (Psalm 106:45).
d) On the basis of the fact that God had a great heart of pity to His people under oppression (Psalm 106:46a).

3. To what end would God send deliverance?

a) That thanks may be given to God’s holy name (Psalm 106:47c).
b) That Israel may triumph through Divine help.
i) Deliverance would redound to the praise of God’s name.
ii) Triumph over great odds would truly bring great honour to the Lord’s name.
