Day 211 – Psalm 108

“Gilead is Mine…” Psalm 108:8

EXERCISING DIVINE SOVEREIGNTY

We have a clear example of God exercising Divine sovereignty over lands in the following text:

“Gilead is Mine; Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the helmet for My head;
Judah is My lawgiver.
Moab is My washpot;
Over Edom I will cast My shoe;
Over Philistia I will triumph.”
Psalm 108:8-9

1. Three tribal regions

a) Manasseh
Gilead in this context is a reference to the Eastern part of Manasseh.
b) Ephraim
Ephraim was a leading tribe of Israel. It is described as a helmet of God.
c) Judah
David came from Judah. He would be “the lawgiver” through his reign over the nation of Israel.

2. Three powerful enemies of Israel

a) Moab
This was a fierce and strong enemy of Israel. Yet, as far as God was concerned, it was merely a lowly “washpot”.
b) Edom
This was also another traditional and mighty enemy of Israel. God urged Israel not to fear the Edomites for it was simply a place where He would cast His shoe.
c) Philistia
David fought with the Philistines on many occasions. They were powerful enemies. Yet the message was clear from God. He will triumph over Philistia.

3. Important spiritual lessons

a) God was in absolute control.
b) It was well within His power to establish Israel. It was also well within His power to overcome mighty enemies.
