Day 218 – Psalm 109

“Let his children be fatherless…” Psalm 109:9a

CONSEQUENCES

Did the wicked think that they could get away with all their evil activities? Then they had not factored in a universal law. There would always be consequences to consider. The imprecatory thoughts that David wrote might be best understood as “consequences!”

“Let his children be fatherless,
And his wife a widow.
Let his children continually be vagabonds, and beg;
Let them seek their bread also from their desolate places.”
Psalm 109:9-10

1. Grave consequences affecting the family

a) The wicked may have a family.
b) They could have children too.
c) But grave consequences would befall the impenitent wicked.

2. “His children be fatherless”

a) The wicked could be slain by other wicked people.
b) Consequently the children would be bereft of their father.

3. “His wife a widow”

This would be an obvious consequence!

4. Far-reaching consequences for the children

a) The children may have to flee for their lives.
b) Their father’s enemies may now persecute the children.
c) The children would end up being vagabonds.
d) They may end up begging.
e) They may be scattered far and wide… even in desolate places.

A SOLEMN ADMONITION

This thought must be read as a solemn admonition to cease from wicked activities. The thought that the family could suffer such grave consequences ought to cause the wicked to cease and desist from doing evil!
