Day 85 – Psalm 11

“The LORD tests the righteous…” Psalm 11:5a

TRUST IN THE LORD’S WILL

David’s trust in the Lord seemed clear and absolute. He was certain that his faith in the Lord would not be in vain!

“The LORD tests the righteous,
But the wicked and the one who loves violence
His soul hates.
Upon the wicked He will rain coals;
Fire and brimstone and a burning wind
Shall be the portion of their cup.”
Psalm 11:5-6

Two lines of God’s will may be distinguished:

1. God’s will towards the Righteous

a) He will keep an eye on them.
b) He only seeks to test them through the trials of life.

2. God’s Will towards the Wicked

a) God hates the following:-
i) The wicked
ii) The one who loves violence
b) God will take action against the wicked
(Strong imagery is to be noted)
i) He will rain coals
ii) Fire and brimstone
iii) A burning wind
iv) The portion of their cup
c) Meaning of these strong descriptions
i) Rain coals opposite of soothing rain.
ii) Fire and brimstone- symbols of severe judgment.
iii) A burning wind opposite of cooling wind.
iv) The cup is a symbol of the receptacle that holds what is poured out by God. In this instance it is a cup of judgment and not blessing!

Given this knowledge and understanding of God’s will, there is no need to press the panic button!
